Introduction

MindWave helps young users reduce social media addiction. Our research found that excessive social media use harms mental health, so we designed an intuitive app to promote awareness and healthier digital habits. The app provides personalized feedback, daily habit challenges, and insights into social media behavior, helping users turn harmful habits into mindful usage.

Problem

Many young people struggle with excessive social media use, impacting their mental health, productivity, and well-being. Existing solutions lack personalization and often feel restrictive rather than empowering.

Goal

Our goal was to create an engaging, user-friendly experience that

  1. Raises Awareness about social media usage habits.

  2. Provides personalized insights and motivational tools to help users control and reduce their addiction.

  3. Empowers users through gamified challenges, making the process of reducing social media use enjoyable and engaging.

Difficult Navigation

Users found it difficult to use the platform and had trouble finding the information they needed.

Too much information

The content was too much and confusing, making it frustrating for users to understand financial topics.

Lack of Personalization

The platform wasn’t tailored to users, making it less engaging and the learning resources less helpful.

Design Process

The design process was broken into the following stages:

  1. Research & Insights: We conducted user interviews with participants aged 18-25, gathering insights on their social media usage behavior.

  2. Empathy Maps: Based on our research, we created empathy maps to better understand the users' needs and emotions.

  3. User Personas: Developed personas to reflect different user needs and behavioral patterns.

  4. Low-fidelity Wireframes: Sketched initial ideas focusing on usability and simplicity.

  5. High-fidelity Wireframes: Created detailed, interactive prototypes using Figma.

Interviews & User Testing

To understand user behaviour and identify pain points regarding social media addiction, we conducted user interviews and testing sessions. The goal was to use real user insights to shape an engaging and impactful user experience.

Key Insights from Interviews

The design process involved several key stages:

Overuse Awareness

Lack of awareness about time spent on social media.

Lack of Personalization

Most users wanted customized feedback and reminders rather than generic advice.

Motivational Triggers

Participants mentioned needing positive reinforcements and motivational challenges to reduce their usage effectively.

Testing Insights

Usability Testing: The app's features were tested for usability, and we used a Feedback Grid to capture thoughts on each feature.

Personalized Notifications

Users found personalized notifications and reminders effective in encouraging healthier behaviours.

Simplified Navigation

Initial testing revealed that the navigation was slightly overwhelming; we simplified it based on user feedback.

Gamified Challenges

Users appreciated the gamified approach with daily challenges, which motivated them to stay engaged.

Reflection

Realized the value of frequent user testing for different skill levels.

Gained experience in teamwork and leveraging strengths for success.

Saw how simplicity makes behavioral changes easier and more engaging.
